What is a Croft?
A croft is a small agricultural unit situated in one of the former counties of Shetland, Orkney, Caithness, Sutherland, Ross-shire, Inverness-shire and Argyll in the north of Scotland, and held subject to the provisions of the Crofting Acts. A landlord often has many tenanted crofts on his estate. The rent paid by the crofter is generally only for the bare land of the croft as the house and any agricultural buildings and infrastructure are often provided by the crofter himself. Since 1976 it has become possible for a crofter to acquire title to his croft, thus becoming an owner-occupier. Both tenants and owners of crofts are expected to reside on or within 10 miles of their croft.
Crofting has changed dramatically over the years since the days of the Napier Commission when our forebearers secured security of tenure in the late 1800′s. However Crofting is still very much a way of life rather than a career choice which can supplement the household income. Crofting tenants and owners, in certain circumstances, are eligible to apply for support under a number of schemes including the Croft House Grant Scheme (CHGS) and Crofting Counties Agricultural Grant Scheme (CCAGS). Under CHGS grants of £11,500 to £22,000 towards the erection or upgrading of a Croft House are available while under CCAGS 50% grants are available up to a ceiling of £25,000 grant over a 2 year period. Support is also presently available to crofters under the Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) for Environmental and Diversification projects with grant ceilings of 500,000 Euros per business available.
